New Hope’s first ever mixed-used development – NHH at Harrisburg

New Hope broke ground in April 2016 on our NHH at Harrisburg development. Located in the historic East End on the METRO light rail, our Harrisburg community is situated in a near-downtown residential neighborhood with access to employment opportunities and social services.

Designed to include a lively streetscape, Harrisburg will offer 175 fully furnished single room occupancy (SRO) studio apartments, plus 4,000 SF of retail space and 7,000 SF of commercial office space for non-profits. Underscoring our mission, we will relocate New Hope’s corporate headquarters to this property.  A grand opening is anticipated for first quarter of 2018.

NHH at Harrisburg will replace New Hope’s Hamilton SRO, which is located Downtown adjacent to Minute Maid Ballpark. Hamilton opened in 1995 as Houston’s first SRO property. This landmark development was made possible by the generosity of the People of Christ Church Cathedral-Episcopal who provided the financial impetus and vision to form New Hope.

Parish members raised $1.25 million and built our very first 40 units of housing at Hamilton. The building was later expanded twice to meet demand, today offering 129 SRO units. The property is twenty years old and required substantial rehabilitation. With construction costs at record high levels, it was determined that building a new property would be more cost efficient and effective.

New Hope was then approached by the Houston Baseball Partners, LLC to buy the Hamilton site. In addition to the land purchase price, they agreed to make a significant charitable contribution to help support a new construction project. Recognizing this as a unique opportunity and marvelous confluence of interests, New Hope accepted the offer. This allowed us to purchase land less than one mile away for a new affordable housing property. NHH at Harrisburg will carry forward the Cathedral’s vision to serve the disadvantaged by offering residents the high quality shared spaces and social service delivery available at our newer and larger SRO properties.

New Hope’s first ever family housing – NHH at Reed

Responding to community need, New Hope is constructing its first supportive housing property serving homeless and at-risk families. Working in close partnership with the City of Houston’s Housing and Community Development Department, New Hope is expanding its reach to offer 187 units of 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments with access to shared common spaces.

NHH at Reed is located on 7 acres immediately adjacent to Star of Hope’s 41-acre Cornerstone Community SM Transformational Campus, off Highway 288 and Reed Road. On the campus and across the street from NHH at Reed, Buckner International will operate their Family Hope Center offering free after-school and summer programs to Reed residents. Shared spaces at Reed will include a courtyard with playground, a business center and multipurpose rooms. A grand opening is anticipated for the spring of 2018.
